# AWS Directory Service Overview

**AWS Directory Service** is a managed solution that provides **directory services** without the need to run your own servers. It is ideal for managing user access to both **on-premises** and **AWS applications**.

## 🖥️ What is a Directory?

* A **directory** is a database containing **login information** for users on a network.
  * When you log in to a computer, your credentials are checked against this directory.
  * It also allows for **group policies** and other configurations, such as:
    * Automatically adding shared **folders** to the desktop.
    * **Different configurations** for different users (e.g., employees vs. CEO).

## 🏢 Microsoft Active Directory (AD):

* **Microsoft Active Directory** has been a key solution for managing **login and user policies** since **2000**.
* **Windows** still dominates the desktop market, particularly in offices, meaning AD is widely used.

## 🌐 AWS Directory Service Features:

* **AWS Managed Microsoft AD**:
  * **Microsoft Active Directory** hosted by AWS.
  * No need to run servers or set up distributed configurations—AWS takes care of **availability and failover**.
* **Simple AD**:
  * A lighter version of AD for organizations that don’t need the full set of AD features.
* **AD Connector**:
  * Allows on-premises users to log in to **AWS applications** using their existing **Active Directory credentials**.

## 🛠️ Compatibility with AWS Services:

* AWS Directory Service integrates with other AWS services like **Amazon Chime** (video conferencing) and **RDS** (databases).
* This means **single sign-on** (SSO) for your AWS applications, simplifying management and improving user experience.

AWS Directory Service is an easy way to leverage **Active Directory** in the cloud without the burden of managing and maintaining **physical servers**, offering seamless integration with other AWS tools.
